Art, Music, Physical Education, and STEM
STEM
In STEM with Mrs. Carter, we are always engaged in the engineering design process. We tackle real world problems, plan solutions, and create. We test and re-evaluate and reflect. Many of our projects are long-term, but some are completed in one to two class periods. Typically, students will work in groups. We often use technology and hands-on time in our Maker Space. We focus on collaboration with peers, flexibility, and critical thinking. Our projects are always integrated with other subjects and content that students are already familiar with from their homeroom class learning.
PE
In a 45-minute PE class with Coach Halleck and Coach Brady, the activities can vary widely, but they generally include a mix of warm-up exercises, skill development, games, and cool-down periods.
The exact content and structure can vary depending on the age of the students, the focus of the lesson, and our school's PE curriculum. The goal is to provide a balanced mix of exercise, skill-building, and fun while encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle.
ART
Art classes at OCES with Mrs. Jones are a 45 minute experience that occurs once per week. We begin a lesson with an introduction/review of elements of art, principles of design and connections to artists/our current world when applicable. Students then learn a new artistic skill that they will then apply to create a product. Products are then either sent home or put on various displays either in the school or throughout the community.
There is an online platform called Artsonia that you may be asked to join. It is an art portfolio for your child that is Digital. Every time your child creates something two- dimensional they will learn how to upload a picture of it. You can access it at any time and order any products you like through it.
There are two art shows that include our work. One is a whole school art show in the spring called Artome. The other is a selection of our works for display at Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation. OCES also hosts art club during the year for each grade. During this time we often explore other forms of art, as well as use our art to support our community.
In art we do tend to get messy, so please consider this when your child has art.
MUSIC
In music at OCES with Mrs. Hinton, students play instruments to learn about rhythm and melody, develop vocal skills through fun songs, games, and performances, and move to music through games and dances. Some of the instruments students get to learn are Orff instruments (such as xylophones), ukuleles, and recorders. These hands-on experiences foster teamwork, creativity, and a deeper appreciation for music.
